[ç-, zu griechisch chēle̅́ »Kralle«, »Krebsschere«], Singular Chelat das, -s, Chelatkomplexe [ç-], Chelatverbindungen [ç-], allgemein zyklische Verbindungen, bei denen ein bestimmtes Atom an zwei (oder mehrere) funktionelle Gruppen eines Moleküls (des Chelatbildners) gebunden ist und dabei von den Gruppen »wie von einer Krebsschere« umfasst wird. Chelate können z. B. durch Wasserstoffbrücken gebildet werden. Besonders wichtig sind Chelate, bei denen ein zentrales Metallion unter Ausbildung mehrerer Bindungen von einem oder mehreren Molekülen oder Ionen ringartig umgeben ist. Derartige Chelate werden u. a. von Polyoxycarbonsäuren, Äthylendiamintetraessigsäure (EDTA) und Nitrilotriessigsäure (NTA) gebildet. Durch Chelatebildung können z. B. Calciumionen in hartem Wasser so gebunden (maskiert) werden, dass es beim Waschen nicht zur Kalkausfällung kommt. In der chemischen Analytik werden Metallionen unter Chelatebildung titriert (Komplexometrie). In der Medizin werden giftige Schwermetalle (z. B. Quecksilber, Blei) bei Metallvergiftungen mit BAL, Penicillamin oder EDTA als Chelate gebunden (Antidote) und dann vom Organismus als ungiftige Chelate ausgeschieden. Spuren von Kupfer, die in Kraftstoffen einen negativen Einfluss auf die Oxidationsbeständigkeit haben, können durch Chelatebildung mit Metalldesaktivatoren unschädlich gemacht werden. Ionenaustauscher mit chelatbildenden Gruppen werden z. B. zur Entfernung von Schwermetallen aus den Abwässern galvanotechnischen Betriebe verwendet. Zahlreiche Farbstoffe (Metallkomplexfarbstoffe) sind Chelate, wobei besonders Chrom- und Kobaltchelate mit Azoverbindungen bei der Textilfärbung und Phthalocyaninfarbstoffe als Pigmente von Bedeutung sind. Auch die Naturfarbstoffe Chlorophyll und Hämoglobin sind Chelate.
